Invite the spring vibe into your home: our guide to deep cleaning

Spring is here, and it's the perfect time to banish the winter dust and grime from our homes in readiness for sunnier days and warmer nights. But deep cleaning doesn’t have to mean heavy-duty bleach and elbow grease. So here’s the Koala Eco way to give every room a natural, safe and entirely thorough clean:

It's a breeze

We’ve all felt the sluggishness and lethargy that stuffy rooms can create. So take advantage of the milder spring days to throw open those windows and doors and let the fresh air circulate through your home, especially while you clean. Be mindful however that air movement can stir up potential allergens like dust, so try to minimise the effect on noses, eyes and airways by attending first to high-traffic surfaces and keeping them clean and dust-free.

Bring on the cleaning superheroes

When it comes to antiseptics, nature knows best. So maybe ditch the harsh detergents, and choose something that will be just as effective but a lot gentler on the planet and on your family. Our Natural Multi-Purpose Kitchen Cleaner, Natural Floor Cleaner, Natural Multi-Purpose Bathroom Cleaner contain powerful essential oils like Lemon Myrtle, Eucalyptus and Mandarin, which will kill 99.99% of germs safely and efficiently, while leaving the most divine natural scent behind. You’ll find our Bamboo Cleaning Cloth and Bamboo Scrubbing Brush to be smart alternatives to plastic sponges. Now you’ve got the right tools to hand, it’s time to get to work.

Blitz (and spritz) the bathroom

Our Natural Multi-Purpose Bathroom Cleaner makes light work of bathroom cleaning and it’s perfectly safe to use on grouting.  Simply spritz it onto your tiles, wait for 10-15 minutes, then use our scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush to work away at stains and discolorations in between the tiles. For bathroom floors, shower tiles, and bathtubs, try this easy tip: spritz them with our Bathroom Cleaner or Glass Cleaner then blast hot water in your shower for five minutes or until steam builds (for bathtubs, simply use enough hot water to cover the bottom of the tub by a couple of cm). Wait 15-20 minutes. You’ll find dirt, debris, and soap scum are far easier to wipe away, and your bathroom will be filled with the cool, camphorous scent of Eucalyptus essential oil or the delicious Peppermint of our Glass Cleaner.

Ship-shape in the kitchen

This is the engine room of the family home, where a lot of the messy and fun action happens. So to keep on top of splashes and spills and any attendant bacterial build-up, you need a really powerful cleaner that’s safe to use anywhere, including food preparation areas. Our Multi-Purpose Kitchen Cleaner with Lemon Myrtle and Mandarin removes bacteria and germs, and can be used anywhere, including microwaves, dishwashers, and refrigerators. For stoves, remove all grates and griddles before spraying grates and range top with our Natural Stainless Cleaner. Wait for ten minutes before wiping spills away with one of our bamboo cloths.

Floor and furniture power

Just how much traffic crosses a floor each day in a typical family home? Fortunately, a little of our highly concentrated Natural Floor Cleaner is more than a match for the hundreds of foot and paw prints. Made with essential oils from Mandarin and Peppermint, just two capfuls added to a bucket of warm water are all it takes to restore your floors. Start from the middle of the room and work your way outwards; this prevents you from tracking footprints onto freshly mopped areas. For stubborn grime and residue, slowing down the process can actually speed things up; so just wait five minutes after applying to your floors, then get mopping. Our Floor Cleaner is also perfect for wooden furniture; just make the same mixture of formula and warm water and wipe down drawers, shelving units, and tables with a soft cloth.

Decrease and de-clutter

Even the most minimalist among us can still accumulate clutter and out-of-date items. It’s natural to want to hang on to possessions, but there are some things that just can’t be repurposed, like old skin care and makeup products, expired medications and foodstuffs long beyond their use-by date. Spring is the ideal time to engage in an annual purge. Start small, and tackle it room by room. Remember that expired medicines need careful disposal: check the regulations and find out what to do according to where you live.  Unwanted clothing and shoes? Donate them.  Better still, resolve to decrease the disorder by accumulating less!

The little things

Don’t forget to clean the typically neglected areas. Use a few puffs of our Natural Multi-Purpose Kitchen Cleaner on a cloth to wipe down air conditioning vents, blinds and shutters, ceiling fans, light fixtures, and windowsills, as well as behind large appliances and furniture like televisions, washing and drying machines, and beds. Then reward yourself! Cup of tea, glass of wine, chocolate…or a nice long nap!
