Dissolving Into Nature: A Moment with Bianca Spender

Dissolving Into Nature: A Moment with Bianca Spender

At Koala Eco, we believe that time in nature is more than restorative—it’s essential to our well-being. Our Hour in Nature series invites thoughtful creatives to reflect on their relationship with the natural world. In this edition, we speak with Bianca Spender, celebrated fashion designer and advocate for mindful living—Founder and Creative Director of her eponymous label known for its sculptural silhouettes and commitment to sustainability. Bianca shares how the wildness of the ocean, the presence of plants, and the quiet wisdom of nature continually inspire her both personally and professionally.

1. What role do natural environments play in shaping human identity and sense of self?

“I’ve always had a deep need to be immersed in nature. There’s something about the wildness and unpredictability of it that makes me feel more myself, more present and more grounded. Living in Bronte, where we’re surrounded by greenery and the ocean is just moments away, I feel constantly shaped by the environment. Nature offers a kind of freedom that’s hard to put into words. It’s a force that humbles and energises me. As a creative, I find it continuously inspiring; it mirrors the emotional movement I try to express in my work.”

2. How do you bring nature into your home?

“Bringing nature into our home is instinctual. We have big windows that invite in the garden, and I often keep fresh foliage or flowers around – not just for their beauty but for their energy. I also love using essential oils and natural cleaning products that evoke the outdoors. They help create a calming, nurturing space that reflects the rhythms of the natural world.”

3. What’s your favourite thing to do in nature?

“Swimming in the ocean is my reset. The saltwater, the cold, the immensity of the sea. It’s a sensory experience that reminds me I’m part of something bigger. That feeling of being suspended and weightless has a huge influence on my creative process. In fact, my latest runway collection, Deliquesce, was directly inspired by the sensation of dissolving into water. Of letting go and allowing form to melt into fluidity.”

4. Do you believe nature has a consciousness or spirit? How does that belief shape your interactions with the environment?

“Yes, I do. There’s a deep intelligence in nature, a kind of knowing that exists beyond logic or words. Whether it’s the way plants lean into the light or the ocean’s endless push and pull, I believe nature is constantly communicating with us. That belief makes me approach the environment with reverence. In both my life and work, I try to tread lightly, choosing sustainable materials, repurposing fabrics, and always considering how my choices impact the world we’re part of.”

5. What is your favourite natural scent, and why?

“Lavender! It’s soothing, calming, and always brings me back to myself. I keep a lavender essential oil on my desk, in my handbag, and beside my bed. It’s such a simple ritual, but it really helps me create moments of calm throughout the day, whether I’m designing, spending time with my children, or simply pausing to breathe.”
