A World That Can Hold Us

A World That Can Hold Us

“In wildness is the preservation of the world.”
— Henry David Thoreau

A major paper in Science Advances recently described mental health as an “ecosystem service” — something the living world provides not through therapy or treatment, but through daily contact: by being intact, diverse, and accessible to ordinary life.
From an ecopsychological perspective, this is straightforward. The human nervous system evolved in continuous relationship with living systems. It still uses natural patterns — light, horizon, movement, sound, season — to regulate stress, attention, and mood.

When those inputs are reduced, the system becomes strained. When they are restored, it begins to settle.

Ecopsychology is not, at its heart, about escape. It is about re-entry — about returning the body to conditions it knows how to interpret and trust. Not dramatically. Not all at once.

But daily. Quietly. By stepping outside. By opening a window. By being in rooms with light, or walking where there are trees, or letting the senses register something not designed to demand anything from us.

In this sense, nature does not fix us. It supports the systems that fix themselves. It gives the nervous system a wider margin of safety, the mind a longer horizon, and the day a structure not entirely built out of urgency.

Over time, this changes what feels possible. And we begin to remember what it is like to live inside a world that is not only something to be part of, but that can, quite literally, hold us.
