How to eliminate synthetic fragrance from your home

How to eliminate synthetic fragrance from your home

Scent, both real and synthetic, is an ever-present part of our lives. From the aroma of our morning coffee to the perfume we apply before leaving the house, scent plays a crucial role in our days. But while conventional fragrances may smell fruity and floral, the reality is far from sweet. Although they may be inspired by botanicals, conventional fragrances are largely synthetic, with many containing ingredients that can be irritating to the skin and cause other health issues.

The term ‘fragrance’ on the back of a label - whether it be in a personal care or household product - doesn’t simply refer to a single ingredient, with the word able to hide a multitude of potentially harmful ingredients. Comprising both synthetic and raw materials that work to create a certain scent as well as solvents, stabilisers, preservatives, and dyes, the word ‘fragrance’ can conceal hundreds of harsh chemicals within a single term, preventing consumers from knowing the full list of ingredients in their products. Some of these ingredients have been shown to be endocrine disruptors, allergens, neurotoxins, carcinogens, and respiratory irritants.

Here at Koala Eco, we’re passionate about real scents. Rather than utilising synthetic fragrances, our household and personal care products make use of pure essential oils, which boast numerous aromatherapeutic benefits in addition to their efficacious cleansing properties. We believe this is an important difference in our products.

Swap out your conventional cleaning products for safer alternatives

From lemon-scented dishwashing liquid to lavender laundry powder, many conventional cleaning products take on botanical scents. However, flip the bottle over and you’ll find that there’s no actual lemon or lavender present in these formulas, with these synthetic scents once again housed within the word ‘fragrance’. Substitute these conventional cleaners with our Koala Eco formulas, harnessing the wild and wonderous power of nature, they’re efficacious while being safe for even the littlest members of your household.

With minimal, easily decipherable ingredient lists, our formulas contain essential oils and plant-based ingredients. Take our Natural Dish Soap for example; powered by lemon myrtle and mandarin essential oils, it boasts antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antimicrobial properties which work to leave your dishes sparkling, while the delicate scents of both botanicals act as natural mood boosters.

Choose natural personal care products

As the products that are closest to our skin, it can be beneficial to avoid synthetic fragrances in personal care products. Powered by a dynamic duo of peppermint and rosalina, our Natural Body Wash awakens the senses and soothes the mind. The refreshing and enlivening scent of peppermint intermingles with calming rosalina, which boasts subtle notes of lavender and tea tree. Turning every shower into a sensory ritual, our Natural Body Wash reassures the mind as it cleanses the skin, with the steam from your shower or bath working to envelop you in the relaxing, scents of peppermint and rosalina essential oils.

Meanwhile, our range of Natural Hand Washes and Natural Hand & Body Lotions make for the perfect way to carry a piece of sensory calm with you throughout the day, delicately scenting your skin with either rosalina and peppermint or lemon-scented eucalyptus and rosemary.

Identify and eliminate miscellaneous synthetic fragrances

Synthetic fragrances are present in air fresheners, scented candles, reed diffusers, potpourri, and room sprays, as well as items like scented trash bags, certain toilet paper, drawer liners, and dryer sheets. For the latter category, opt for unscented items over scented versions (simply check the ingredients lists to ensure there’s no added ‘fragrance’, ‘perfume’, or ‘parfum’).

To keep your home smelling beautiful, maintain proper ventilation by opening the windows in your house daily and letting fresh air in. Then, use plant-based scents to fragrance the air. Powered by pink grapefruit and peppermint essential oils, our Natural Room Spray sets an uplifting tone for the day, with pink grapefruit acting as a natural mood booster and peppermint working to alleviate headaches, boost cognitive function, and improve memory.

Meanwhile, our Natural Pillow & Linen Spray is an ideal alternative to scented drawer liners - to keep your clothing and linen smelling fresh, lightly spritz them before folding and putting them away. Combining cool eucalyptus to decongest and clear the airways to help you breathe easy, peppermint to alleviate headaches and mental tension, and rosalina which works to soothe the senses and calm the mind, our Natural Pillow & Linen Spray offers a sensory escape with every spray.
